Come into the Garden, Maud: Joan 'Maudie' Warburton (1920-1996)

An exhibition celebrating her art on show at the gallery from 3-19 April 2026

Co-curated by journalist and editor, Lindsay Fulcher, and Hadleigh Old School's Ian Grutchfield, the title of the show is 'Come into the Garden, Maud', a quip Arthur Lett-Haines made shouting up to Joan who was looking out from a bedroom window at The Pound, his home with Cedric Morris. After this, she was always known as ‘Maudie’. We are keen to spotlight this notable British artist, who is one of the longest serving, female alumni of the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. The exhibition is being staged with the kind permission of the O'Malley Estate (including Joan Warburton's son, Twig, and her great niece, Carolyn Jenkins) and their long-standing agent Sally Hunter Fine Art which is providing provenance.
